The story of most importance for the world this past year was the negotiated delay of the ongoing Iranian nuclear program. It involved a first effort by the United States and Iran to patch a long-standing sixty years of mutual distrust and hated. After a missed hand shake and a phone call, may well have begun a peaceful reconciliation of the two antagonist. It could become the most important international event of the decade and signifies the first step for long-term peace in the region.
The roots of discontent, animosity, and distrust began in 1941. The British anxious over its total access to Iran’s rich oil fields charge the Iranians with pro-Axis activity and occupied the country forcing abdication of the Raza Shah in favor of his son Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi.
