Circuses are happy events that generally last two hours, American campaign circuses last 400 days. Otherwise there are other comparisons if one uses a hyper far-out imaginations. Hillary Clinton as the lying lion tamer; Donald Trump the unqualified, boorish lion; the ambling stubby elephants and stubborn donkeys circling the three-ring arena, and the paint-faced juggling clowns, and who would ever forget them, you know their names, Cruz, Rubio, and Romney; hay, wait a minute, where are they? And by the way where is the not too old, old Republican guard, George W.Bush, and his brain Dick Cheney who helped America sail through the Iraq War II and the worst Recession since the Depression. We owe them a debt of gratitude and I’ll have to leave it at that, don’t want to embarrass the Grand Old Party.
Arriving from a quick trip to the concrete jungle they call Singapore I immediately turned on the TV. It was Republican party-time. The screen opened and there suddenly appeared the FOx network, the most popular and watched news show according to polls, mostly theirs, just happened to be on. The staff announcer proceed to criticize the Democratic National Convention, and harped on it, and on, and on about it. Like ‘The Democrats are not paying enough attention, ignoring the families of the police officers killed in the line of duty’ and ‘The Democrats didn’t mention terrorism.’
In general the Republicans can’t find anything of substance to criticize the Demos so they come up with these modest trivial issues to toss around in lieu of important themes of national and political interest and concern. Benghazi and the overblown Clinton emails fiasco doesn’t seem to work for them anymore. They are passed do like beating a dead horse. There is not much for Repubs to criticize, but the two parties are are joined at the hip on other more devious themes and do not want to rock the boat by mentioning them: the various legislative gifts and benefits both parties grant to banks and corporations, the insurance and drug companies. You know the Sanders and Warren stuff that should be the meat and potatoes at conventions.
(As I write this post, an issue has surfaced for the Republicans that being the U. S. government has allegedly paid Iran 400 million dollars in ransom to free four prisoners once held by Iran at the Evin prison in Teheran. (been there) This has caused controversy as it is illegal to pay ransom for prisoners according U. S. law. At this point it is not clear the payment may have been part of the American-Iranian nuclear deal or not. Nevertheless, folks, these things happen more than we know. The French and Italians are famous for paying up. One may recall the Contra Affair under President Regean involving Colonel Oliver North, and CIA Director Casey, and that beautiful blonde wittness named Fawn that shuck it to the Regean Administration by attempting to purchase Tow Missiles, weaponry etc. from Iran to be transfer to the American backed Contras in Nicaragua and also to allow several U. S. and British hostages be repatriated in Lebonon. Same difference. But why were we purchasing American made Tow Missiles from Iran? Hmm Well, that’s another story going back to the Shah)
Readers put aside everything you’ve read or heard about these two campaigns for a minute. Think nationally, internationally, European political campaigns last 60, 90 days or less because they have a Democratic Parliamentary System. In American presidential campaigns seemingly last forever. Yet, the Europeans elect popular rational leaders without the extensive demeaning hassle the U. S. goes through every four years. Of course the elected are under constraints, but they seem to be doing just fine as I have written in the past. Remember the ex-British Prime Minister David Cameron, and the present replacement P.M.Theresa May, Germany’s Merkel, France’s Hollande, and the much maligned democratically elected Turkish President Erdogon whose a creditable politician, they say he is incorruptible, authoritarian, egotistical and mean. Other European leaders, east and west, are doing their required jobs with little or few political insults and backbitings while campaigning that we have become us to hearing, and also once in office Europeans adequately serve the public. A parliamentary system would be ideal for the United States, it generally functions more smoothly and effectively, but it will never happen in our country because it’s too, too “Un-American.”
All the Best.
